Circumstances being unpropitious, he returned to New Haven, Oswego County, N.Y., where he remained until the breaking out of the Rebellion in 1861, when he enlisted in the Twenty-fourth Regiment New-York Volunteers, Company D, for two years; served his time and honorably discharged; reenlisted in the First Regiment Michigan Volunteers, Company C, for three years or during the war; was in the seven days fight before Richmond. He was soon after taken sick, and sent to the Mills Creek Hospital; transferred to Long Island College Hospital, N.Y., where he began to improve; was again transferred to McDougal Hospital, Ft. Schuyler, New-York Harbor. Here he was enrolled in the U.-S. Invalid Corps, Company H, Tenth Regiment, where he remained until March 4, 1864, when he was mustered out of the U.-S.service, a cripple for life; but "Uncle Sam" gratefully remembers him with a pension of $72.00 per month for his past services."2
