At his majority he went to Townada, Penn., and worked at his trade, harness-making, for eighteen months, when he left for the West, reaching Jerseyville, Ill., in 1840, worked at his trade in Carrolton for awhile, but soon after opened a shop in Jerseyville, which he carried on until 1846, when he engaged in mercantile pursuits for the next eleven years; erected a large mill and distillery at Jersey Landing, which he operated until 1859; general agent for C. H. McCormick's reapers for many years. In 1862, he became sutler to the Sixty-first Illinois Volunteer Regiment; in 1866, he engaged largely in the milling business. Three times elected mayor of the city; one of the first trustees after its incorporation; one of the pioneers in the organization of the Jersey-County Agricultural Association, and was in Nov., 1871, elected as its president."2
