William A. Goodrich was born on 5 February 1849 at Gill, Massachusetts.2 He was the son of William E. Goodrich and Sarah Ann Smalley.1 He married Eliza Martin on 15 September 1875.2 He resided at Atkinson, Nebraska.2
Transcribed from Case: "at the age of seventeen years he went to Boston to learn the trade of machinist and study engineering; in 1869, he engaged with the Washington Foundry, St. Louis, Mo., as designer; in 1872, engaged with the Vulcan Iron Company as mechanical engineer, in the construction of blast furnaces, and at the same time did all their designing and drawing; in 1876, was employed as designer of the Broadway Foundry Company; in 1880, elected superintendent of the works, where he constructed some of the largest machinery ever built in the West, e.g., the blowing-engine of the Jupiter Furnace, with a cylinder eight feet four inches in diameter, five foot stroke, weighing eighty tons; in 1881, these works were destroyed by fire; not rebuilt. He was employed by Gould & Ostrander of St. Louis, to construct an oil-mill and cotton-compress at Little Rock, Ark; having completed these works, he went to Atkinson, Neb., purchased a farm of three hundred and twenty acres, and became a farmer."2
